Exploring the Ancient Art of Pointillism Through Modern Techniques

dot art 2025

Dot Art, also known as Pointillism, is a unique painting technique that creates images using small, individual dots of color. Instead of mixing pigments directly on a palette, colors visually blend through the viewer’s eye, creating rich, vibrant textures and intricate patterns.

This workshop guided students through the fundamentals of dot art, covering color theory, dotting techniques, and pattern-building methods essential for mastering this detailed art form.

Workshop Overview

Key Concepts Covered

What is Dot Art?

An expressive technique where images are formed entirely through dots. By strategically placing colored dots, artists create depth, gradients, and visual blending for striking, detailed compositions.

Basic Color Theory

Primary colors (red, yellow, blue), secondary colors (green, orange, purple), complementary opposites creating contrast, and analogous neighbors producing harmony and smooth transitions.

Using the Tools

Use dotting rods and ball styluses with yogurt-like acrylic paint. Dip straight, press vertically for dots. Reload evenly for consistency, or 'walk the dots' for tapering effects.

Pattern & Composition

Build complete artworks through layering, strategic dot placement, gradients, symmetry, and pattern formation. Every student completed their own intricate dot art piece.
